Apple has quietly launched a new budget-friendly iPhone, the iPhone 16e, on February 19. This model offers a significant upgrade for cost-conscious users compared to the 2022 iPhone SE. Preorders for the iPhone 16e are now available, with the full retail release scheduled for February 28. Notably, Apple has discontinued the 2022 iPhone SE and the iPhone 14 in new condition.
The iPhone 16e is priced at $599, making it a more economical alternative to the $799 iPhone 16, which we recommend as the best iPhone for most users. The 16e includes features such as Apple Intelligence, Face ID, and an Action button for customizable shortcuts.
Apple’s iPhone 16e boasts a single 48MP camera capable of capturing 2x optical-quality photos.
Similar to the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16e is equipped with a 48MP Fusion main camera that can produce high-quality 2x optical photos. Although it is a single-lens camera system, Apple markets it as a “two-in-one” camera due to its integrated optical 2x functionality.
The Action Button, which debuted with the iPhone 15 Pro models in 2023, is also featured on the iPhone 16e. This button provides convenient shortcuts to various features and functions, though it does not include the latest Camera Control button found in the flagship iPhone 16 series.
The iPhone 16e is powered by Apple’s first-ever cellular “C1” modem, which the company claims is the most efficient modem available in an iPhone. While it supports 5G networks, it does not work with super-fast mmWave 5G. Additionally, the device supports Apple’s satellite-based safety features, including Messages via satellite, Emergency SOS via satellite, and Roadside Assistance via satellite. It is also equipped with Crash Detection.
