Chasing the Aurora: Tonight’s Northern Lights Predictions

Several U.S. states along the Canadian border may have the opportunity to witness the aurora borealis on Tuesday, according to the latest predictions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Key Facts

  • NOAA anticipates a Kp index of three on a scale of nine for Tuesday night, indicating the northern lights will be brighter than usual as they move away from the poles, creating a pleasing view for those in suitable locations.
  • The aurora is expected to be less active on Wednesday and Thursday, with projected Kp indexes of two for each day.
  • Be advised there is a potential for minor radio blackouts until Friday, possibly affecting high-frequency radios due to recent solar activity.

Where Will The Northern Lights Be Visible?

According to NOAA, the northern lights are likely to be most visible across Alaska. A view line indicating minimal chances of seeing auroral activity extends just below the Canadian border, suggesting lower probabilities in six other states: Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

What’s The Best Way To See The Northern Lights?

For optimal viewing, seek a high vantage point away from light pollution between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time, as recommended by NOAA.

What’s The Best Way To Photograph The Northern Lights?

National Geographic suggests using wide-angle lenses suited for low-light conditions, with an aperture (F-stop) of four or lower and focus set to infinity. For smartphone users, enabling night mode and disabling flash is recommended.

Key Background

The year 2024 saw northern lights displays reaching a 500-year peak as solar activity reached a “solar maximum,” according to NASA. A significant geomagnetic storm, the strongest in two decades, occurred in May 2024, allowing visibility of the auroras in all 50 states. This mesmerizing display occurs when electrons from solar activities such as solar flares interact with nitrogen and oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. This interaction excites the atoms, producing light, which results in the colorful auroras. NASA also projects increased auroral activity to continue into early 2026.
